“Beauty will save the world.” – Prince Myshkin

In the novel, The Idiot, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky the central character, Prince Myskin, was accused of proclaiming that beauty will save the world. He was laughed and ridiculed by many, but to him, he was simply stating the obvious and couldn’t understand the people’s mockery.

2020 has been exceedingly difficult for everyone of us all around the world. Covid has brought with it a lot of ugly. I don’t know if beauty will save the world but I do know that when I am surrounded by it I feel a lot better. Beauty reduces my stress levels and it makes me feel that there is goodness and rightness in my world. It is not something I need to try to figure out how to understand. It is something I can simply enjoy.

Beauty is illusive and almost impossible to define. Most people will agree that it is in the eye of the beholder however most people will also agree that certain things are as beautiful while other are not. Many have said truth is beauty while others will say there is beauty in math and geometry. There is beauty in an innocent child’s face and beauty in an act of kindness. There is so much beauty in this amazing world we live in and as an artist I search for it and try to express it in my works. Sometimes I’m successful and others I am not. Many other artists I know are also inspired by beauty.
