Greg Swain at home

10 years after his passing Collins Studio Gallery is proud to present artwork by Gregory Michael Swain assembled from private collections – many of which have never been show in a public exhibition before.

Greg Swain was a third generation Edmontonian whose artistry, mentorship and encouragement to other artists made him a prominent figure in the local arts community.  With studio/residence spaces in the Society of Northern Alberta Print Makers (SNAP – Saddlery Bldg.) ArtsHab 1, and City Centre Apartments, he was a larger-than-life presence supporting those arts-based communities and the many individuals who passed through their doors.

Swain’s work was heavily influenced by his interest in the Mexican celebration of Dia de los Meurtos, the Day of the Dead, and the honoring of and connecting with ancestors and other departed beings from the spirit world.  His later work often portrayed skeletons in everyday day situations to remind us that this was something we all had in common and may one day ourselves be returning spirits.

Join us and others touched by Greg's influence at a public reception for the opening of the show April 19th (5:00 - 8:00), almost 10 years to the day of his passing.  We look forward to celebrating his memory and spirit of comradery and support.

The show runs through Saturday May 11, 2024
