Oil Painting Basics with Jeff Collins

This class will provide you with an excellent understanding of the techniques and materials required to launch yourself into the expressive and beautiful world of oil painting. Numerous exercises include simple bush techniques, drawing with a paint brush, colour recognition, paint mixing skills, and more. You will develop the skills, gain the abilities, and acquire the knowledge to continue expressing your experiences in beautiful oil paint.

 Topics covered include:

  • Oil painting supplies and materials

  • Surface preparation  

  • Colour Theory

  • Colour mixing - Learn to quickly recognize colour and mix it to lay in quick colour sketches

  • Direct and indirect painting techniques

  • Brush handling techniques including painting with a palette knife

  • Still life value studies

  • Still life colour blocking

  • Gesture and contour paintings

  • Composition exercises

Participants will work from life and photographs.   

*A material list will be sent out prior to the first class. Participants can expect to pay between $150 and $350 depending on their needs and desires.
